“Who’s bad?” – M. J.

August 29, 1958 - June 25, 2009

Yesterday was the one year anniversary since the passing of Michael Jackson. The Schwan guy had stopped in for his routine visit, along with my parents the four of us got to talking about where we were when  he passed. I has just received an offer of employment from Joe’s Crab Shack in Tempe, quietly sitting there in a booth with two girlfriends who already worked there (Danielle & Trina) and we sat watching the TV in complete disbelief. It was almost as if it were a joke. Now, I didn’t cry or anything, though plenty of people did I’m sure, but I was still affected by his death nonetheless.

It’s a funny thing though–tragedy–not in the humorous sense of course, more of an ironic way . We remember so specifically what we were doing when the planes struck the World Trade Center on 9/11 and we remember where we were when we heard of Princess Diana’s passing and of course Michael’s as well.

But what about every other day? Why can’t we make every day just as memorable? Is it because the tradegy of losing a beloved entertainer is far more appealing to our natural human instincts than say that of of losing a decent job, getting into a car accident, or even something as minute as stubbing your toe? Is it because those things hit much closer to home, therefore directly affecting our lives in comparison? I’d certainly say so.

I’d also say that it’s much easier on our emotions to lose an entertainer than it is to experience the loss of a job or a loved one dear to us, and that’s because although we do have some kind of attachment to said entertainer we don’t quite have that same dependency as we do on a job or loved one. Or is that the good things that happen to us seem so insignificant that we hardly notice them?

Ben & I like to have Michael Jackson hour at our house where we dance around for several songs like complete idiots. We like to refer to this point of the day as our cooling off period because it’s when we can just let loose and shake off all the stress from that day. Plus, who doesn’t like being silly?

My favorite song by Michael is “Bad.”

What’s your favorite MJ song?

Do you remember where you were when you learned of his tragic passing?
